Summary:Described herein is a method of modulating erythropoiesis using a follicle-stimulating hormone-releasing protein. The invention relates to a method for modulating the rate of erythropoiesis in human hematopoietic progenitor cells via the use of FRP which has been shown to be an efficacious potentiator of erythropoietin-induced differentiation. Also provided are properties of inhibin which has been shown to be an efficacious suppressor of erythropoietin-induced differentiation. Further disclosed are methods by which FRP and inhibin are shown to be functional antagonists of each other and may therefore be used in combination as an effective means for the modulation of erythropoiesis. Therapeutic applications are included for various diseases which are caused by or associated with an abnormal rate of erythropoiesis.
