Described herein are methods by which the activity of slow-cycling cells may be modulated and the efficacy of agents may be evaluated for their ability to modulate the activity of stem cell populations. Further disclosed are methods by which cells that are continuously labeled may be induced into a proliferative phase by exposure to an agent such as TPA or a cytokine, and then observed in relation to established criteria. Therapeutic applications are included for the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal hair growth and skin cancers. This invention represents a continuation of other applications filed by the same assignees. | | Abstract: | Methods of detecting label retaining cells in self-renewing tissues, such as hair follicle, are provided.
