Summary:This invention introduces a method of detecting and counting hematopoietic progenitor cells using flow cytometry without the use of antibodies. Described herein is a process for detecting immature cells, constructing a cell distribution profile and detecting sub-classes of the hematopoietic progenitor cells. Further disclosed are methods by which a blood sample is mixed with a reagent that is capable of detecting immature cells from which information is obtained about the cells via a particle analyzer from which a cell distribution profile is constructed and in which a portion of the profile is delineated as a zone in which at least one subclass of hematopoietic progenitor cells appear and are counted. Claims of the invention include the ability to detect hematopoietic progenitor cells in a simple and positive manner. This patent was reissued on March 7, 2006 as patent USRE39006.
