Inventors:Pang, Kevin K.; Belmont, MA, USA
Homa, Monica W.; Marblehead, MA, USA
Summary:Described herein is a pure population of viable bile duct progenitor cells, methods and uses thereof. The invention relates to a process by which progenitor cells are isolated from a bile duct, and methods of culturing a bile duct explant which is composed of epithelial and stromal layers such that the explant retains in culture its original epithelial-mesenchymal microarchitecture. Further disclosed are the means by which the progenitor cells derived in this manner may be differentiated into pancreatic and hepatic cells. Therapeutic applications are included for the implantation of such cells in the treatment of diabetes and liver disease.
Abstract:The present invention relates to a substantially pure population of viable bile duct progenitor cells, and methods for isolating such cells. The present invention further concerns certain therapeutic uses for such progenitor cells, and their progeny.
