Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6001654

Title:Methods for differentiating neural stem cells to neurons or smooth muscle cells using TGT-.beta. super family growth factors
Inventors:Anderson, David J.; Altadena, CA, USA
Summary:This invention introduces in vitro methods for producing a population of mammalian neurons or smooth muscle cells via a process of contacting at least one mammalian neural stem cell with a growth factor which is a member of the transforming growth factor-? (TGF-?) superfamily of growth factors. Also provided are methods of detecting the differentiation of stem cells to a population of neurons or smooth muscle cells. A variety of experimental and therapeutic applications are included.
Abstract:Method for producing a population of mammalian neurons and/or smooth muscle cells comprising contacting at least one mammalian neural stem cell with a culture medium containing one or more growth factors from the TGF-.beta. super family and detecting the differentiation of stem cell to a population of neurons or smooth muscle cells.
