Summary:Described herein are methods of using the ZVEGF4 polypeptide for purposes of promoting bone, ligament or cartilage growth in a mammalian site of fracture, implant, and bone graft, and methods of use of this polypeptide for promoting the growth or differentiation of osteoblasts and chondrocytes in culture. The invention relates to a process for promoting the growth of bone, ligament, or cartilage in a mammal, via the administration of a composition comprising a pharmacologically effective amount of ZVEGF4 in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable delivery vehicle. Further disclosed are the means by which a mammal is administered a composition comprising a pharmacologically effective amount of a protein composed of a first polypeptide disulfide-bonded to a second polypeptide, wherein each of the first and second polypeptides comprise amino acid residues 258-370 of SEQ ID NO:2 and wherein each protein is mitogenic or chemotactic for mesenchymal cells, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable delivery vehicle. Further elucidation of such therapeutic applications is included.
Abstract:Methods for promoting growth of bone, ligament, or cartilage in a mammal are disclosed. The methods comprise administering to said mammal a composition comprising a pharmacologically effective amount of zvegf4 in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable delivery vehicle. Also disclosed are methods for promoting proliferation or differentiation of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, chondrocytes, or bone marrow stem cells comprising culturing the cells in an effective amount of zvegf4.
